The study of nanometer scale phenomena is a rapidly growing branch of condensed matter physics, driven largely by the enormous potential markets for nanotechnology. A particularly fruitful branch of nanoscience in recent years has been the study of nanometer scale magnetism ('nanomagnetism'). One of the greatest challenges facing development and exploitation of nanoscience is fabrication of nanostructures. I propose to investigate the feasibility of fabricating magnetic and non-magnetic metallic nanostructures using directed deposition of low energy metal ions. The principle of operation will be similar to a Focused Ion beam miller: metal ions, created by electron bombardment of an atomic flux generated by thermal evaporation, will be accelerated and focused by electrostatic lens to a small point (~100nm) on a substrate. The focused point can be moved by deflector fields under computer control and nanostructures 'drawn' directly with the metal ions that, once neutralised, will form the material from which the nanostructures are made. The project will seek to build an ion writer in a high vacuum environment and to assess its performance, both in terms of limitations to possible beam current, resolution etc. and in terms of the magnetic and microstructural quality of the nanostructures thus fabricated.
