The preparation of manipulation of pure quantum states represents the ultimate degree of control that is achievable over a physical system. The attainment of this degree of control over the quantized motional states of atoms in optical lattices, along with the means of monitoring their evolution, will allow tests of fundamental aspects of quantum physics and may have a significant impact on emerging technology in the areas of nanofabrication, wavelength-scale length and quantum information processing.This proposal is to develop means of quantum-state manipulation and measurement using atoms trapped in optical lattices, which are ordered arrays of light-induced, wavelength-scale microtraps. The lattice-inducing light will be tuned far from any atomic resonance to suppress the dissipative effects of spontaneous emission. Atoms will be prepared coherently semi-classical and non-classical motional states and to monitor their evolution. These techniques will then be applied to a study of coherent superposition states of single atoms in double-well potentials.
