Summary on Grant Application Form
Scanning probe microscopy has revolutionised our understanding of many aspects of interfacial science. The present proposal seeks to provide a platform for continued growth of interdisciplinary research on interfacial chemistry and materials science at UMIST, building on successful existing activities. Funds are requested for the purchase of a scanning probe microscope to foster cross-disciplinary research involving the Departments of Chemistry and Instrumentation and Analytical Science and the Corrosion and Protection Service. It is required to meet growing demand for access to our current facilities, and to provide novel modes of operation that will facilitate the exploration of new areas of research. The instrument will support work in a wide range of fields, many identified as key priorities by Foresight, including polymer surface characterisation, studies of polymer film formation and investigation of the molecular basis of adhesion, conducting polymers for the development of novel sensors based on the detection of gases and odours, studies of the growth of zeolite crystals, nanofabrication of molecular and biomolecular arrays and studies of interfacial biology.
