This composite proposal comprises of five component bids for equipment and/or apparatus that will enhance and enrich the research capability and infrastructure of leading groups of physical and computational scientists within the University of Manchester. The selected areas of research directly reflect and support key aspects of the University's research strategy through engaging in new, and strengthening existing, multi/interdisciplinary research, with a particular emphasis given to the physical-life sciences interface. The University has invested significantly in developing parts of this interface, with external support from the Research Councils and Medical charities, with particular success in Bioinformatics and Medical/Health Informatics where strong multidisciplinary teams across Medicine, Biological Sciences and Computer Science exist. This bid takes our strategy one step further through enabling the provision and development of state-of-the-art laser facilities and apparatus, high performance computing system and a tunnelling electron microscope. This will support:* Investigation the fundamental interaction mechanisms during laser irradiation of biological tissue.* Rapid development and deploy novel hardware and software technologies for the benefit of computational scientists and engineers.* Establishment UHV scanning tunnelling microscope and spectroscopic observation of molecules at surfaces including organic molecules at mineral surfaces.* Underpinning new collaborations in atomic and molecular physics via provision of laser atom manipulation apparatus.* Novel tests of theoretical (non-linear) fluid dynamics with experimental observations using particle imaging velocimetry.
