Capital equipment is requested to support six difference areas of multidisciplinary research.The solid state NMR will be used to quantify atomic structure and binding in a range of materials, which will compliment information provided by advanced electron optical techniques. The environmental SEM will provide direct microstructural imaging of unmodified complex structured systems and allow the investigation in situ dynamic processes. Both these material characterisation facilities will be applied to an extensive range of multidisciplinary research projects.The gas chromatograph will offer new opportunities to study trace levels of organic compounds across a range of research areas including petrochemicals, combustion, environmental chemistry and natural products. The 400 NMR spectrometer will be linked with the work of biological scientists in tissue specific screening, and the work of chemical engineers in rapid real time monitoring of experimental reactors.The NIR laser system is a key piece of infrastructure to support the rapidly emerging field of Terahertz Imaging, and will be applied to biomedical projects, food science and materials characterisation.The Silicone Graphics Supercomputer will provide a platform for applied mathematical modelling in, shape optimisation and engineering design, polymers, physics and non-Newtonian flows, soft solids and self-organising molecular systems, and computational biology.
