Summary on Grant Application Form
UMIT has a strategy of developing interdisciplinary science. This is exemplified by a recent investment strategy in the interdisciplinary aspects of the Life Sciences, building on links between DIAS, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Bimolecular Sciences, as well as links with the University of Manchester, the Christie Hospital, and the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research (in establishing the Manchester Positron Emission Tomography Centre). UMIST is also investing in refurbishment of laboratories in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, Chemistry and DIAS to facilitate further interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary initiatives such as those which exist between Electrical and Chemical Engineering and Mathematics in Process Tomography. The three areas of research defined in this proposal, and the equipment for which funding is requested, will advance our strategic aims by enabling further new research. The first priority is to establish a UV/visible/IR tuneable laser facility to develop new tomographic measurement techniques and diagnostic spectroscopic methods. The second priority is concerned with providing an open access mass spectrometry facility to enhance the research capability of a broad range of scientists working in the Life Sciences, Analytical Science, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The third priority is to provide a new X-ray facility, essential to interdisciplinary research, to replace ageing and increasingly unreliable equipment. Thus the first component support new research directly, whereas the second and third will support and enable a wide range of novel interdisciplinary research through the provision of analysis and diagnostic equipment.
