Summary on Grant Application Form
Research on magnetic superlattice and multilayer systems is one of the main themes in magnetism today. The UK has a number of strong research groups working in this area. The aim of this proposal is to set up a network of these groups and stimulate joint, internationally-leading research. The main focus will be on fundamental studies of the magnetism in these systems (magnetic structures, magnetoelastic effects, hard/soft multilayers, hybrid systems such as magnetic/superconducting multilayers, etc). This work will form an underpinning for applied research on magnetic multilayer devices. The participating groups will meet in annual Network Workshops over a three-year period. Furthermore the collaboration in this network will support bilateral exchange visits, stimulate research by inviting international speakers at CMMP and assist in postgraduate training by providing support for participation in the IOP Magnetic Measurement Workshops. A website will be set up to promote this field of research and to assist in dissemination and information transfer between groups.
