Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is the investigation of bulk Sil-xGex crystals using the (SR technique. Muons act like light hydrogen isotopes, and observation of muon behaviour in semiconducting materials enables analogous hydrogen states, sites and dynamics to be determined. Such investigations of Sil-xGex alloys are timely, with the relatively recent growth of bulk Sil-xGex material allowing detailed investigation of bulk alloy properties. These investigations will shed light on the differences in muon (and hence hydrogen) behaviour between the elemental materials Si and Ge, and will provide a novel opportunity for investigation of muon behaviour and state stability as a function of band gap and lattice parameter in the Sil-xGex system. The muon measurements will be carried out at the ISIS pulsed muon facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory using the EMU instrument and the new radio-frequency (SR Spectrometer on the DEVA beamline. The results of these investigations are expected to benefit the semiconductor community, particularly those involved with computational or experimental investigations of the behaviour of hydrogen within electronic materials, and those interested in the passivating effects of hydrogen with relevance to device applications.
