Under this programme novel room temperature nanobolometers will be produced in which the device is cooled by ballistic electron transport away from the active region. It is predicted that such devices will have a speed of operation of order 0.8ps (ie. the device will cool down on this timescale). This speed of operation is a consequence of the small size of the device. Since the device is resistive, with few associated parasitic impedances the device will couple readily to a very high frequency (>100GHz), sources, as is generally the case with bolometers. Fast cooling will allow extremely wide IF bandwidths (to -100GHz), tuned by geometry. At the same time, this small active volume of the device allows the use of relatively small energy per cycle of excitation, giving reasonable efficiency at moderate input local oscillator power. Unambigous characterisation of primary and secondary heat transport mechanisms requires time-domain electrical measurement. The devices will be fabricated, tested and the underlying physical processes quantified. Device optimisation will proceed on the basis of an understanding of the physics. Preliminary investigations of non-electronic applications (ps calorimetry) will be made.
