The project will establish a scientific basis for designing reinforcing fabrics for composites where the structural fibres are coming led with thermoplastic fibres. This combination of materials has been shown to be an excellent route to producing tough composites using low viscosity brittle resins in processes such as infusion and resin transfer moulding. At present the optimum properties for the thermoplastic fibres, and the optimum arrangement for these fibres has not been established. Factors such as the role of TP-fibre-thermoset matrix adhesion, the relative spacing of TP fibres and structural fibres, the combination of hybrid and standard yarns, need to be assessed on the basis f a sound understanding of the mechanisms in the relevant composites. This programme will systematically vary the properties for the constituents and examine fracture at different levels of scale from model composites through o structural laminates in order that the interaction of all relevant parameters is understood. Model testing will be completed by parallel FE modelling to allow the search for optimum system to be de-coupled from the specific materials available and maximise the range of material variables that can be considered.
