Biomass forms the essential component of the renewable energy scenario which needs to be developed in the UK. Analysis of energy scenarios has shown that biomass is best used to fire CHP plants, with variable electrical output to back-up intermittent wind generation, or as small-scale plants providing heat and power to identified users. These stand in contrast to existing UK biomass plants, driven by NFFO to concentrate on electrical output. The technologies appropriate for biomass conversion in future will therefore be different. Selection criteria will depend on technical, economic and environmental performance, and also on public acceptance (given that obtaining planning permission is a serious obstacle to renewable energy plants in the UK). This project will apply Life Cycle Assessment to analyse the performance of selected technologies, allowing for operating conditions such as variable electrical output. Field studies at five selected locations will investigate public perceptions and concerns over biomass development, and identify technological characteristics and alternatives which could make biomass developments more acceptable. These studies are to be carried out with the involvement of key industrial players, including SME's. The results will provide the basis for decisions over biomass development which contribute to Sustainable Development.
