|
Soft ballistic armour is constructed from multi-layered woven fabric panels made from continuous fabric sheets. However, previous work at UMIST has demonstrated that fabric strips absorb more energy than larger fabric panels and that still further improvements can be achieved by including the fabric selvedge along one side of the strip. The proposed project aims to take the work on fabric strips further and to investigate the use of narrow fabrics in ballistic protection. Narrow fabrics are structures where the selvedges play a part in the performance of the material, for example as in seat belts. The Department of Textiles at UMIST has two narrow fabric looms and these will be used to produce a range of narrow fabrics. These will be ballistically tested in-house in order to obtain a better understanding of the mechanics of narrow strip impact and to identify the important parameters that contribute to increased performance.
