Summary on Grant Application Form
We plan to continue the development of the scanning x-ray microscope supported by a previous grant, GR/K73381. The work to be carried out requires input from the developers (physicists) and users, including life and materials scientists and industry. X-ray microscopy is continuing to develop worldwide and the user community is growing rapidly. The microscope we have developed is unique; all other modern scanning x-ray microscopes use synchrotron sources and while a few other research groups are developing microscopes for laser plasma sources these are not scanning systems. The development requires improvements to be made to the source (in particular its energy tuneability), the scanning mechanism , the x-ray optics, the x-ray detector and the computer control hardware and software. These will be tested at King's College before transferring to the x-ray microscope at the Lasers for Science Facility, which we intend to develop as a laser facility.
