Summary on Grant Application Form |
This one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) advanced research-led MSc programme provides a rigorous formal training in modern neural computing, preparing students for a research career in an industrial or academic environment. Students attend 8 lecture courses during eight months (September to April), followed by examinations (May), and a three month research project (June to September). The aims of the programme are to teach the students: (i) definitions and properties (including potential and restrictions) of the most commonly used neural systems and algorithms, (ii) the mathematical techniques required to analyse their operation (e.g. statistics, information theory, statistical mechanics), (iii) how to use these techniques for quantifying the operation of neural systems (including design and improvement, but also performance and reliability prediction), (iv) where and how neural computing techniques are used in information technology, and how they compare to more standard approaches, and (v) how to obtain and maintain access to the most recent research results in the academic community.
