Summary on Grant Application Form
The research will be based on case studies of landfills in the field. A pilot study of CFCs at an unlined landfill site revealed a previously unidentified plume of leachate-contaminated groundwater entering a river 500m away. Up to 4 more unlined sites will now be studied, plus one with a liner constructed to modern standards. Most will be chosen (with the advice of operators and the Environment Agency) from a list of 8 in SE England at which the PI has worked previously. Chosen sites will vary in factors including surficial deposits (gravel, silt), aquifer (chalk, limestone, sandstone), thicknesses of unsaturated zones and proximity to water-courses. Samples of landfill gas, unsaturated zone gases and groundwaters from monitoring wells, and groundwaters and surface waters from the surrounding area will be analysed for CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113 and CC14 by GC-ECD, using established methods. Results will show the areal extent to which each landfill's CFC-signature can be detected in natural waters, and whether this signature is acquired solely from contamination by leachate, or is influenced significantly by gases in the unsaturated zone adjacent to the site.EngProg\
