Summary on Grant Application Form
Market pressures, related to product differentiation and appeal in particular, are driving the need for food and beverage cans of increasingly complex shapes. These trends place considerable demands on production techniques since the traditional approaches to on-line manufacturing will have to be considerably modified or even completely replaced. From a commercial viewpoint, not only must robust forming procedures be designed, but an optimal process in terms of production costs, forming speeds, tooling design including wear considerations, etc. must be developed. The designed product must also satisfy in-service load conditions. The primary aim of the proposed research is to develop an efficient and robust computational tool for modelling and simulation of shape forming operations in can manufacturing. The prototype version of a decision support system will enable complex shape forming operations to be scientifically designed, allowing the process parameters to be optimised with regard to manufacture and final product performance. In collaboration with Corus-British Steel and other end-users the decison support system will be applied to simulations of prototype industrial products, design of tooling and process parameters, and other relevant aspects of shaped can manufacturing.
