Historically the methods used to evaluate the corrosion behaviour of metals and alloys have been based upon 'macroscopic' measurements of corrosion current and/or potential. These measurements assume activity to be uniformly distributed over the corroding surface. Where deviations from uniform to localised corrosion occur, conventional methods do not provide appropriate quantitative information on the amount of damage. 'Novel' scanning techniques are now able to provide meaningful spatially-resolved information on the progression of local activity.The proposed programme will provide a central facility, i.e., a scanning vibrating probe (SVET) system based at SHU. This facility will enable a number of multidisciplinary, inter-institutional research programmes to be established or gain added value. The application for support is the direct result of discussions held within the EPSRC-funded network.The proposal will involve researchers from 4 universities (2 UK and 2 EU) and 4 Industries, (BAe, British Steel, Avesta (Sheffield) and Advanced Surface Treatments Ltd.Keywords describing areas of proposal.Biology, Facilities, Instrumentation, Materials, Networks
