Well-defined metathesis initiators have become widely used, versatile reagents in organic synthesis for C=C bond formation. The highly active molybdenum-derived species are both difficult to prepare and are extremely sensitive to air and water restricting their use by practising synthetic chemists. These problems will be circumvented through the use of polymer-supported molybdenum imido alkylidene reagents.Initially, a range of diol-functionalised polstyrene resins will be prepared and characterised as potential catalyst supports. After synthesis of the appropriate precursors, well-defined molybdenum imido alkylidene moieties will be grafted to the surface; the resulting heterogeneous reagents should be both easier to handle and more robust than their homogeneous counterparts. The supported catalysts will be tested for a variety of metathesis reactions (eg ring closing metathesis). Results from catalyst stability and activity testing will be used as a basis for redesigning the support materials. A more long-term goal will be to develop a 'solid phase-type' approach to the desired supported imido alkylidene reagents which utilises easy to handle, air stable, and readily available building blocks.
