Summary on Grant Application Form
We would like to open up a new area of investigation in atomic photoionisation, namely the study of excited (satellite) states of doubly charged atoms (dications). Here the incident photon causes the simultaneous promotion of three electrons; two electrons ae ejected and another one is promoted to an unfilled orbital. These states promise much new science. In analogy with satellite states of singly charged atoms, these dication satellites are expected to be dominated by electron-electron correlations except that the correlation effects may be even more dramatic. Also they converge to triple ionisation limits and therefore their study provides a route to the future observation of photo-triple ionisation where a single photon leads to the ejection of three outgoing electrons, which is an important long-term goal.
