Summary on Grant Application Form
his project seeks to meet the challenges of providing broadband optically fed millimetre-wave wireless (including cellular) systms at low cost by investigating architectures which use modulation linearisation, wavelength division multiplexing and bilateral optical amplification to provide multi-operator up-and down-links to a number of antenna sites using a single fibre feed.Specific areas of work include system modelling of optically fed broadband wireless systems using wavelength routeing and bilateral optical amplifier tecniques, studies of linearisation techniques for microwave modulated optical sources to achieve spurious-free dynamic range exceeding 90 dB.Hz^2/3, enabling multiple operators to use the same broadband wireless infrastructure, the integration of low cost wavelength division multiplex (WDM) components and uncooled optical sources in the proposed architectures and investigation of bilateral optical amplifiers for complexity reduction in the optical signal distribution systems. The work includes the design, construction and assessment of a full duplex demonstrator operating in the frequency range 26 GHz to 33 GHz for data rates up to 155 Mb/s/channel, capable of addressing multiple (~10) antenna sites using a single fibre.
