We aim to increase the effectiveness of computer-based auditory training for second-language learners by (1) enriching the speech material presented via the addition of signal enhancement and speechreading information, (2) using effective auditory training methods and (3) modelling teacher-user interaction using a conversational agent (CA) driven by an interactive dialogue-based system.In Phase 1, using the 'high variability perceptual training' procedure, a range of auditory and auditory-visual conditions will be evaluated to select the one leading to the greatest improvement in the discriminability of novel speech contrasts. In Phase 2, dialogue interactions with a CA acting as 'virtual teacher' during training will replace text-based instructions. The effect of the CA on the effectiveness and acceptability of computer-based training will be evaluated using the 'best' condition selected in Phase 1. In Phase 3, information on the phonological systems of different languages will be implemented so that the speech contrasts used in training will be customised to each user. The output of the project will be the requirements for auditory training software with language learners from a range of language backgrounds, and provide the foundation for similar packages to be used with users with language and hearing impairments.
