The first phase involves finding the limits on hydrogen recovery with the existing compressors. First, simple compressor models will be developed to identify operating constraints and predict how they will perform under different conditions. Secondly, these models will be used with a mathematical programming approach in order to find the true maximum hydrogen recovery. The third step will combine the mathematical approach with previous hydrogen pinch methods to identify the retrofit pinch.The second phase involves overcoming the retrofit pinch systematically. The insights developed in the previous task will be used to find a simple and cost-effective set of modifications - such as compressor revamping, gas purification and installing new compressors - which will remove the limitations and allow greater hydrogen savings to be achieved.The final phase will be a demonstration of the new methods on an industrial case study. This will involve strong interaction with local industry as well as significant data collection. The results will be translated into an investment plan for the refinery.All stages of the research will involve development of computer code.
