The project consists of three work packages: quantifying and compensating for brain pulsation artefacts in diffusion weighted imaging; devising a combined acquisition and post-processing approach to produce artefact-free multi-shot diffusion tensor images; visualisation of white matter tracts from tensor images. The work will be carried out by an image analysis researcher at KCL and an MR physicist at ICH.In previous work we have generated multi-shot EPI images of volunteers and patients. The diffusion weighted images and ADC maps have good signal to noise and negligible ghost artefacts, but a low spatial frequency intensity artefact acused by non-rigid pulsatile brain tissue motion remains. This prevents quantitative use of diffusion measurements. We will study the pulsatile motion of the brain, and devise strategies to correct for it without the time-penalty of cardiac gating. The strategies will include measuring brain velocity during the acquisition and using post-processing techniques to remove the intensity variation (analogous to RF inhomogeneity correction). We will extend our approach to multi-shot diffusion tensor imaging using additional diffusion weighting directions. To visualise white matter tracts we will devise segmentation and visualisation schemes for the tensor data.The acquisition and post-processing techniques we develop will be validated on volunteers.
