This research will investigate the physical properties and engineering geological setting of the sfot clays at two sites on the Humber estuary and will compare them with the EPSRC Bothkennar research iste. It is motivated by the opportunity presented by the NERC LOIS/LOEPS investigations (recently completed) to conduct such a study in a very well-documented setting, particularly since the LOIS programme did not address geotechnical issues. The proposed research will generate new material properties data about the Humber deposits and will additionally illuminate the extent to which the results from Bothkennar may be representative of soft clay deposits elsewhere in the UK. The comparison will be based on the geotechnical profiles, soil fabric and depositional histories of the sites, which have both similarities and contrasts in their postglacial geological settings. Techniques include X-ray densimetry, high resolution logging, XRD, SEM, geochemistry and geotechnical profiling (w%, LL/PL/Su/oedometer). The research will involve the exmaination of fresh material and existing cores from the Humber (new work at Bothkennar is NOT proposed). The proposal is considered to be a very cost-effective capitalisation on the major investments already made both at Bothkennar and on the Humber during the NERC programme.
