The aim of the project is to develop design and operating recommendations for DAF process improvement. This will be done using a DAF froth-based simulator that will show visually the froth coalescence zones, describe the liquid and solid motion and predict the bulk flotation performance in terms of solids concentration and recovery. The coalescence model in the simulator will be developed from micro-manipulator data of bubble-bubble and bubble-particle interactions. UMIST will develop the simulator.Micro-manipulator experiments will measure the force required for bubbles to coalesce, with or without particles present, for different geometries and physico-chemical conditions. Development of the micromanipulator and the experiments will be performed at UCLDAF simulations will quantify the effect of design and operating variables on flotation performance and will be tested on laboratory and pilot-scale. Recommendations will be made for industrial implementation.
