Summary on Grant Application Form
The state-space approach to dynamic systems casts the system dynamics in the form of a set of coupled first order differential (or difference) equations. When this is done for a second-order system, some of the special character of second order behaviour is obscured. We ordinarily use real state vectors in the time domain and complex state vectors in the frequency domain. This research effectively proposes to examine the use of state vectors which comprise numbers from the Clifford algebra, C12, in the frequency domain (each of these has four distinct parts) and complex-like numbers in the time-domain. By doing this, the special nature of multi-degree-of-freedom second-order systems can be preserved and potentially many computations for second order systems can be accelerated and clearer understanding can be facilitated. We already have concrete evidence of a major computational advantage in the calculation of characteristic roots of self-adjoint second-order systems. We now seek to extend this advantage to many other computations of great practical significance and we aim to simplify the treatment of second order systems in general.
