Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed instrument would support our activities in several key areas within the department - Microwave Optoelectronics, Telecomms and Optical Networks - allowing us to perform both time and frequency domain measurements in one sweep over a bandwidth of 110 GHz. As well as supporting ongoing research in dense Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) networks, optical techniques in microwave systems, third generation mobile radio systems, high data rate digital optical systems, multiwavelength transmission devices and wavelength-division multiplexing devices it would open possible new areas in broadband millimetre-wave fibre-radio and millimetre-wave spectroscopy for medical imaging. The new instrument would add to and complement our existing range of communications and optical test equipment and enable us to conduct research at the leading edge of high speed telecommunications. It would also replace our existing microwave network analyser which is now 14 years old and can only carry out waveguide bandwidth limited millimetrewave measurements to a maximum frequency of 40 GHz. The existing instrument may then be used for less demanding research projects and for general postgraduate training - giving research students exposure to industry-standard equipment.
