Summary on Grant Application Form
A wide range of model two dimensional systems accessible in atomically layered helium films on graphite will be investigated by heat capacity and NMR down to 0.1 mK. Correlations in 2D Fermi fluids formed in helium mixture films will be tuned by varying the 3He density and the thickness of the superfluid 4He film. The possibility of 2D 3He superfluidity will be pursued. We will make the first experimental study of phase separation in monolayer fluid helium isotopic mixtures. In addition a study of 3He adsorbed in single wall nanotubes, a possible 1D Fermi system, will be started. The critical dynamics near the Mott-Hubbard transition in 2D 3He will be investigated by NMR measurements. The superfluid density approaching the superfluid insulator transition in a 4He monolayer (possible Mott-Hubbard transition in 2D Bose system) will be determined using a torsional oscillator. We will develop a sensitive torsional oscillator to observe 2D superfluid in 3He films of thickness of order 100nm (or order the bulk T=0 coherence length). The magnitude of the spin gap of the predicted quantum spin liquid ground state of 2D solid 3He on a preplated graphite substrate will be investigated.
