We propose to further develop our transportable selected ion flow tube, TSIFT, as a non-invasive analytical device for the detection and quantification of trace gases in breath. We will continue with our studies of the metabolites in breath of patients with renal failure and metabolic disorders such as diabetes. We aim to further explore the potential of the TSIFT as a non-invasive monitor for clinical diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring and to determine influence of diet on breath metabolites. We will expand our preliminary work with the TSIFT on assessing molecular markers of tumours on breath and above the urine of cancer patients. We will underpin these in vivo studies with in vitro studies of the molecules emitted from normal cells and specific cancer cell lines, in order to determine the efficiency of marker molecule generation in assessing the body tumour burden for specific cancers. Following the improvement gained from the clinical research, we will use the TSIFT for the early screening of clinical disease such as those referred to above.
