A post-doctoral fellow is requested to implement a programme of work using (inter alia) the high-field (600 MHz) solid-state NMR spectrometer installed at the University of Warwick under EPSRC grant GR/L24250 (on which Prof. Harris was a co-applicant). The research involves investigating the methodology of MAS NMR for I=1 nuclei (6Li & 14N), for 7Li and 170,and for a range of low-frequency quadrupolar nuclei (25Mg, 35/37Cl, 43Ca, 47/49Ti, 91Zr and 95/97Mo). The resulting expertise will be applied to structural and dynamic chemistry in (a) SiAlON and modified SiAlON ceramics, (b) sol-gel precipitated zirconias and titanias, (c) materials of negative thermal expansion, (d) metal nitrides, and (e) chlorine in low electric field gradients. As much work as possible will use the low-field (200 MHz) spectrometer at Durham. The PDRA will also be required to undertake some high-temperature synthesis of ceramic compounds.
