Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed project is to develop a versatile and robust numericla model for simulating practical ultrasonic Non-Destructive Evaluation problems in fibre reinforced composites. A properly constructed computer model will be invaluable to the cost effective development of Titanium metal matrix (TiMMC) composites, and their interaction with a range of defect types and boundary conditions. The geometries and defect types of interest will be for a set of realistic problems relevant to the next generation to TiMMC engine components in the aerospace industry. The models will be primarily based on an explicit finite-difference approach and will include several novel features. The application to metal-matrix composites will be novel in the sense that there is no existing model which can combine the treatment of a complex, heterogeneous medium with the inclusion of a range of defects of different types. In addition to providing the full wave solution, these models include multiple scattering and will be accurate over a very large frequency range. There will be novel developments in the mathematical treatment of the scattering problem so that the above objectives can be achieved.
