Summary on Grant Application Form
Initial studies will focus on the synthesis of linked binding units which can be used to incorporate lanthanide ions in binding sites which are in close proximity to suitable sensitising chromophores. Such simple systems will allow the determination of the hydration of the lanthanide ions using luminescence spectroscopy. Since Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) contrast agents operate by causing close diffusing water molecules to relax more quickly than the bulk solvent, it is anticipated that systems which contain a number of lanthanide ions will have improved contrast properties while retaining the high kinetic stability essential for their application in diagnostic imaging. Once these simple studied have been completed, it is proposed to synthesise dendritic systems containing a number of lanthanide binding sites which can be used in a similar way. In addition, by selective protection of different sites in the dendrimer, it will be possible to produce functionalised systems containing different lanthanide ions. These will be very useful in determining the interactions between bound lanthanide ions.
