Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will seek to identify a route to achieving optimum energy absorption in composite laminates. The key role of interlaminar and through thickness properties in controlling energy absorption has been demonstrated in glass fibre composites and the inital task in this work will be to confirm a similar relationship in carbon fibre systems. An experimental programme will be undertaken in which laminates will be prepared with various combinations of in-plane properties and through-thickness properties. The through-thickness properties will be controlled and improved by introducing stitching, pinning and the use of discrete, thin veils at interply boundaries. The inherent energy absortion capabilties of the laminates will also be modified by the use of hybrid textile reinforcements.Fracture processes will be studied by microscopy and linked to material variables.
