Panel History:
Summary on Grant Application Form
Nuclear physics studies have been revolutionised by the use of highly sensitive instruments which can pick out very weakly populated exotic channels formed in nuclear reactions. The signal may be swamped in a high level of background due to a number of factors, including fission competition or simply that other channels are much more strongly populated. By using tagging techniques to gate on a discrete signal, following the decay of the nucleus of interest at the focal plane, the signal to noise can be dramatically improved. We aim to utilise a variety of tagging techniques associated with the GREAT spectrometer used in conjunction with the RITU separator at Jyvaskyla to make a significant improvement in our knowledge of nuclear structure in both very heavy nuclear systems and lighter nuclei along the N=Z line.
