Research on automatic facial animation has led to an emergent technology which is sufficiently mature to be used in the design of experiments on the perception of dynamic information in faces. The project aims to investigate whether dynamic information can be used as a cue to identification by extracting motion information from faced and instantiating those movements on a standard 3D model head. This will allow the investigation of whether motion information alone can serve identification - a question which would otherwise be difficult to answer definitively. The project will also develop techniques for temporal caricaturing of facial gestures and examine whether temporal caricaturing can enhance recognition of known individuals or previously learned models. We will also address the question of whether the internal representation of face and head movements are based on dynamic change within an investigating generalisation from learned views to novel views. Experiment will initially rely on commercially available motion capture and animation software. As time progresses we will develop a novel face animation system based on the extraction of face parameters from optic flow information both benefiting from and supporting the psychophysics.
