Summary on Grant Application Form
Most of the performance analysis tools that support the development of efficient parallel applications have been designed for the message-passing programming paradigm. With the increasing availability and popularity of single-address-space architectures, and with the emergence of OpenMP as the shared memory API (Application Program Interface) standard, it is appropriate to design and develop corresponding tools for the shared memory programming paradigm. In this project we propose to develop and evaluate such a performance evaluation tool which will categorise loss of parallel performance in terms of a hierarchical classification of overheads. It is intended that the overheads data be presented at the program level where it is meaningful for the programmer but relatively difficult to obtain, rather that at the hardware level where the data is readily available but not very useful for the programmer.
