Telecommunications technology has now advanced to 60 GHz bandwidth modulation applied to 1.2 to 1.5 micron IR carriers in wavelength division multiplex systems. For the first time this permits the exploitation of the benefits of MMW spectroscopy on a wide scale for gas analysis using low cost cavity cells at multiple remote analysis nodes on the network, with the MMW source and control computer located centrally. To demonstrate the principle of this concept, whilst maintaining the costs to a realistic level, experiments are proposed, that will also investigate a novel extension of MMW spectroscopy to atmospheric pressure measurements. A demodulated MMW modulation waveform and control signals will be generated at the analysis node cavity and a MMW absorption measurement made. The detected MMW signal will be analysed at the node and the data transmitted back to the computer using both a semiconductor laser diode source and later a Mach Zehnder modulator as an example of passive modulator using the network IR carrier. The experiments will demonstrate the potent of both the atmospheric MMW measurements and the use of an MMW modulated IR telecommunications technology for remote gas analysis.
