Summary on Grant Application Form
A high precision torsional oscillator will be developed for the detection of two dimensional super-fluidity in 3He films of thickness of 100nm and below. The substrate will be coated with a thin superfluid. 4He film, in principle to create a specular boundary for quasi-particle scattering and thereby avoiding suppression of the superfluid order parameter. In parallel we will work on the detection of the NMR response for a similarly prepared sample using SQUID NMR techniques that are part of our current programme. These same techniques will be applied in a search for the proximity effect in saturated dilute mixtures. The suppression of the A-B transition in carbon foams will be investigated by conventional continuous wave NMR.
