Summary on Grant Application Form
The objectives of the research is to develop new braze alloys using Cr as the active addition to wet join ceramics to metals for high temperature applications. This will be achieved by developing on ealier work on the Cu-Cr-Ni-Si system which has identified alloys that wet silicon nitride and silicon carbide without the formation of interfacial reaction products. We will also assess B containing transient liquid phase brazing alloys for comatipility with SiC and Si3N4. High temperature Ni based alloys will be investigated to identify likely braze alloy compositions. Trial braze alloys will be prepared and atomised to form braze pastes/tapes for use in a joining programme. Joint strengths will be assessed at temperatures up to 800C and strengths will also be determined after thermal exposure/oxidtion tests.
