There are two main sources of errors associated with a numerical method for solid mechanics: discretisation error and round-off error. The finer the mesh, the smaller the discretisation error and the higher the round-off error. The existing numerical methods,including the Finite Element and Boundary Element methods, are deficient in solving mathematically degenerated crack problems. We propose to develop an efficient method to solve the crack problems where the degeneration is concentrated at a finite number of crack tips or lines (singular points) only. The method for the determination of two dimensional stress intensity factors is well developed and more than a dozen of research papers has been published in leading journals. The method will be extended to 2D and 3D cracks of composite and delamination. The core of the research is to find analytically and/or numerically the relevant eigenfunction expansions at the crack tips.
