Summary on Grant Application Form
Cold-formed steel sections are increasingly being used as primary load bearing members of building structures, and thus their fire behaviour becomes an increasingly important design consideration. At present, there are few studies on this important subject and the design procedure is still based on limited information from standard fire resistance tests supplied by various manufacturers. There is an urgent need to carry out a comprehensive research study to rectify the lack of design information. This proposal intends to conduct a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study to investigate the behaviour of various types of cold-formed steel sections under fire conditions. This study will be carried out using the unique fire testing facilities, in conjunction with a number of numerical models and a vast experience of research into the stability of cold-formed steel sections, all available at the University of Manchester.
