Although it is now possible to cure a considerable fraction of all cancer patients, it is still often difficult to predict the outcome of radio-or chemotherapy and hence tailor treatment for an individual. One factor known to be important is the set of physical and structural properties that comprise a tumour's micro-environment . Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has already demonstrated great potential for investigating non-invasively many of the components of this micro-environment, but in order to maximise the information obtained from such studies, it is necessary to increase the speed of MRI measurements. In a collaboration between two institutions and five different disciplines, the applicants seek to address these issues by exploiting a new ultra-fast imaging technique called Burst, which has a number of extremely attractive properties. The goal of this project is to develop improved Burst pulse sequences, yielding higher resolution images with better signal-to-noise than currently available. Work will be performed on a 1.5 T clinical scanner, leading to patient trials, and on a new 11.7 T research system. In both cases, the ultra-fast images obtained will be used to measure quantitatively key parameters of the tumour micro-environment.
