At present only 9.2% of the annual arisings of 53.5 Mtons of construction and demolition wastes (C&D Waste) is directly recovered. Many contractors take all C&D waste to landfill for fear that contaminants make it unsuitable for recycling. Effective methods of risk assessment and a quality assurance system for recycled C&D wastes are needed. This project aims to develop a methodology which will facilitate increased recycling of C&D wastes. The project will review current practice and assess the magnitude of the problem, including methods of risk assessment and C&D waste recycling currently used by contractors. It will sample material in existing C&D waste flows and develop improved methods suitable for both the spatial and temporal variations in materials and contaminants. The method will be trailed with recycler partners. Standard leaching tests will compare the mobility of contaminants in C&D waste fills with that in soils. Risk assessment methods will be evaluated by field tests on actual sites with building contractor partners. Trials of the chosen methodology will be made with contractor partners. A manual and sampling methodology for use by contractors and geotechnical laboratories will be presented to users through workshops and as a BRE digest.
