It is intended to investigate the feasibility of utilising steel industry zinc oxide containing waste dust for desulphurising molten iron from blast furnace en-route on steelmaking. Critical background information on relevant desulphurisation reactions and thermodynamic and kinetic data for the reactions between ZnO-Fe oxides-C-CaO and molten Fe-C-S-Si-P-Mn will be established. Such information is vital to the steel industry as a result of increasing zinc input from galvanised scrap and will form the basis for developing alternative low-cost reagents for desulphurising hot metal by optimising a feed made up of various ZnO laden steel industry waste materials which are currently landfilled. The physical preparation of the feed material as well as methods of injecting into the hot metal will be addressed. Reaction efficiencies, logistics and process engineering aspects of utilising ZnO waste oxide dust will be assessed in collaboration with industry in order to (i) utilise an internally generated waste for a critical process for producing high quality steel; (ii) reduce consumption of the expensive Mg currently used; (iii) minimise iron loss arising from skimming; (iv) recycle the iron content in the waste dust and (v) recover the resulting ZnS in the exhaust system for use in the non-ferrous industry.
