Summary on Grant Application Form
There is a need for improved diode laser sources for mid infrared spectroscopy. The research aims to fabricate a room temperature 3.3um laser with an external cavity, which can form the basis of a ppm ethylene gas sensor. Heterostructure interfaces which exhibit quasi quantum well confinement for electrons and holes and which are type II in nature are to be used. This approach has the advantage of being simpler, requiring fewer layers, making the laser easier to manufacture than cascade or superlattice structures. Because recombination occurs predominantly at the interface quantum wells which are triangular the e-h overlap is increased and will be tailored using the doping levels to maximise radiative recombination.Modelling and simulation will be carried out to elucidate the details of the heterojunction band offsets, doping levels and layer thicknesses to enable device optimisation. Oxide stripe lasers (multimode) will be fabricated as a precursor to double channel etched structures (single mode) which will finally be produced with an external cavity. Edinburgh sensors will evaluate the lasers at the end of the project.
