Summary on Grant Application Form
Using an existing deposition system able to produce films of size-selected magnetic particles in non-magnetic matrices and an existing magnetometer, we will carry out a study of GMR in granular films as a function of cluster size and volume filling fraction. The ability to vary these parameters independently of each other enables us to optimise the performance and select the operating magnetic field rang eof the material. Since there is complete flexibility of choice of the magnetic and non-magnetic materials we will be able to explore GMR in films of magnetic grain and matrix combinations which cannot be produced by other techniques for example Fe and Co in transition metal matrices. We will also investigate tunnel-type GMR in insulating granular films.
