Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to develop a new two dimensional finite volume numerical flume model based on a volume of fluid (VoF) approach which will be capable of simulating storm waves propagating in the coastal surf zone and overtopping a vertical or recurved sea wall. An existing 2-D Plan shallow water model will also be assessed for applications to overtopping of sloping sea walls up to the limits of its range of applicability. This scheme uses modern high resolution upwind scheme of the type currently employed in the aerospace community,. Breaking waves are simulated by travelling bore wave. Both this and the VoF model will permit the use of boundary-fitted irregular computational meshes with mesh adaptation to complex geometries and dynamic mesh adaptation to moving wave fronts. The numerical work to be carried out in this research programme will be complemented by a full experimental programme to be undertaken by Bruce and Allsop. Links between the two programmes and agreed deliverables have been identified at appropriate points.
