Summary on Grant Application Form
The manufacture of electronic products is increasingly being done across supply chains, with Contract Electronic Manufacturers [OEM's] operating in a highly competitive environment. Very short time-to-market and tight profit margins mean that it is essential for the CEM to be able to configure the manufacturing processes rapidly to make new products. Achieving full volume production of consistently high quality products in as short a time as possible is vital. This requires a detailed knowledge of manufacturing processes and the effects of variability, and tighter integration between design and manufacturing processes. This proposal seeks to integrate work done under previous EPSRC grants to achieve this process understanding and to investigate the coupling of design and manufacture systems across an agile supply-chain. This will involve feed forward of design information to rapidly configure new manufacturing processes and to allow the development of intelligent test systems , which inspect areas where problems are forseen. It will also enable the feedback of manufacturing information to validate manufacturability guidelines in a design advisor environment.
