Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal describes the development of a novel thermoanalytical technique, micro-thermal analysis, for the characterisation of pharmaceutical materials. The technique combines the principles of atomic force microscopy with modulated differential scanning calorimetry, as the scanning tip of the former is fitted with a temperature probe which allows generation of a modulated heating signal to specific regions of the sample. Consequently, it is possible not only to identify different phases on a microscopic level via their thermal properties but also their individual melting, glass transitional and thermomechanical properties. We intend to develop the use of this exciting new approach within the pharmaceutical sciences, looking specifically at compressed tablets, powder mixes, partially amorphous materials and polymeric drug delivery system.
