Summary on Grant Application Form
Microstructural information in advanced technological materials of considerable complexity and inhomogeneity, ie in III-V and II-VI semiconductors, superconducting oxides and oxide catalysts, will be related to the electronic structure, eg to the local bandgap and joint density of states (JDOS). This will enable one to relate defect sites to (i) optical properties of GaN light emitting sources, (ii) the efficiency of CdTe solar cells, (iii) the metal to non metal transition in Ba-bismuthates, and (iv) the catalytic activity and selectivity in oxide catalysts. The studies on the above materials systems will be carried out by electron energy loss spectroscopy in the interband scattering regime (ie between 1 and 4 eV) with nm spatial resolution in dedicated FEG STEM, with a particularly narrow emission function. The studies will be complemented by ELNES and EXAFS measurements, where possible. Existing software to extract to JDOS will be improved and the underlying models revised. The proposed research programme will tie in with existing programmes, from which materials will be drawn and whose results, obtained by a consortium of other techniques, eg reflection ELS and PL, XANES, XAFS, STM/AFM I-V profiles, will complement those obtained on the proposed programme.
